1st May – Gambol
For the first Freedom Principle of our summer 2012 season we’re delighted to welcome back Birmingham bassist Chris Mapp and his band Gambol, featuring some of the Midlands’ top musicians. You may also have caught their storming gig at last year’s Manchester Jazz Festival.
Chris Mapp (bass), Sam Wooster (trumpet), Lluis Mather (saxophone), Dan Nicholls (keyboards), Jim Bashford (drums)
15th May – No Good Beatniks
No Good Beatniks are a collective of like minded musicians who focus on dirty grooves and distorted jazz – expect ‘broken beats with a dancefloor vibe’!
Henry Botham (keyboards), Nick Blacka (bass), Rob Turner (drums) + special guests
5th June – Cath Robert’s Quadraceratops
Quadraceratops is a brand new septet playing original music by London-based saxophonist Cath Roberts, inspired by the music of Björk, Steve Coleman and Bad Plus bassist Reid Anderson amongst others. The band features some of London’s most exciting players, many members of the groundbreaking F-IRE Collective
Cath Roberts (saxophones), Tom Ward (saxophones), Dave Orchant (trumpet), Magnus Dearness (trombone), Kit Massey (piano), Dave O’Brien (bass), Luke Christie (drums)
19th June – Ma
Led by the incredible saxophonist Tom Challenger, Ma are one of the most exciting and innovative bands around at the moment. We’ve been trying to get them to Sandbar for ages so we’re delighted that we’ve finally managed to make it happen as part of their UK tour supporting their new album ‘The Last’. Improv, electronics and samples combine to create “long, glittering key chords invaded by clattering drum’n'bass patterns and hooted at by distant sax fragments” (John Fordham, The Guardian). Not to be missed…
Tom Challenger (saxophone, keyboards), Matt Calvert (electronics), Dave Smith (drums)
3rd July – Johnny Hunter Group
For the last Freedom Principle before our Summer break we’re pleased to present the debut performance by the Johnny Hunter Group. You may well have seen drummer Johnny perform with Skamel, Marley Chingus or the Dub Jazz Soundsystem, or at the free improvisation Noise Upstairs events. With those influences combined with the talents of some of Manchester’s most in-demand emerging musicians, a storming night is guaranteed!
Ben Watte (saxophone), Graham South (trumpet), Stewart Wilson (bass), Johnny Hunter (drums)
