Freedom Principle

Efpi Records is delighted to present FREEDOM PRINCIPLE, an evening of amazing music and equally amazing beer at Sandbar in Manchester. On the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month we’ll be bringing you a wide range of original improvisation-focused music from across the UK, with influences from jazz/funk/folk/rock – basically anything that’s great! And all for only £3 entry fee (which includes a disount at the bar!) – bargain… We’re there from 8.30pm and music starts at 9pm.

19th June – Ma

Led by the incredible saxophonist Tom Challenger, Ma are one of the most exciting and innovative bands around at the moment. We’ve been trying to get them to Sandbar for ages so we’re delighted that we’ve finally managed to make it happen as part of their UK tour supporting their new album ‘The Last’. Improv, electronics and samples combine to create “long, glittering key chords invaded by clattering drum’n'bass patterns and hooted at by distant sax fragments” (John Fordham, The Guardian). Not to be missed…

Tom Challenger (saxophone, keyboards), Matt Calvert (electronics), Dave Smith (drums)

You may well have seen drummer Johnny perform with Skamel, Marley Chingus or the Dub Jazz Soundsystem, or at the free improvisation Noise Upstairs events. With those influences combined with the talents of some of Manchester’s most in-demand emerging musicians, a storming night is guaranteed!

Ben Watte (saxophone), Graham South (trumpet), Stewart Wilson (bass), Johnny Hunter (drums)
