November Efpi Showcase Tour

November 2011 is shaping up to be the busiest month in our short but colourful history! Not only will we be locking ourselves away to work on some exciting releases for 2012, but Efpi musicians from home and abroad will also be embarking on an extensive showcase tour all over the country, including two gigs at the London Jazz Festival. Kicking off in Sheffield on the 9th with some free improv from Efpi co-founders Sam Andreae and Anton Hunter, the tour will then see various combinations of HAQ, Trio Riot and the Claire James Trio wind their way across England before ending on November 19th with the final chance to catch the Beats & Pieces Big Band in 2011, the conclusion to an incredible year for the band.

We’re particularly excited to introduce the UK to Trio Riot (pictured above), a sax-sax-drum group formed in Helsinki in 2009, as well as teaming up with The Forge in Camden again for our first ever Efpi showcase gig as part of the London Jazz Festival. Also at the festival, we’re proud that Beats & Pieces have been included in a programming series at Kings Place that throws the spotlight on young artists from across the UK, Europe and USA alongside Robert Glasper, Gretchen Parlato, Nik Bartsch and Rory Simmons’ Fringe Magnetic.

Ingrid Laubrock’s Sleepthief

The Noise Upstairs presents…

German born saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock is teaming up once again with acclaimed UK pianist Liam Noble and one of New York’s finest drummers, Tom Rainey for an exciting brand of new improvised music. Sleepthief play with a wide spectrum of sound, rhythm, space and colour whilst maintaining a strong feeling for form.

Those of you who were lucky enough to see them last year will definitely not want to miss out this year, and if you weren’t there, this is your second chance!

Now, characterised by remarkable tonal variation and great empathy with Noble’s gritty piano textures, the slightly loose sound of their duo came into sharp focus when joined by Rainey’s atmospheric drumming. They will be performing live to celebrate this fact on Sunday 27th September in Fuel Cafe Bar, Withington at 8:00pm, as a special ‘The Noise Upstairs’ event.

Special guest performances from ‘inclusive improv’ – an ensemble hand-picked from the regular nights in Huddersfield. And ‘Token Otter’ – Josh Kopecek (laptop), Ben Cottrell (saxophone) and Anton Hunter (guitar).

Freedom Principle & The Noise Upstairs are hosting a night at this years Chorlton Arts Festival. It definitely promises to be a unique experience with a variety of groups performing in the fantastic venue that is St Ninians Church. There will be a mix of contemporary performance drawing influence from jazz/classical/electronic & Jewish music. We will also be staging several spacial-sound-jams which audience members will be encouraged to take part in. Oh yeh, and we’ll be supplying the food, if you bring the booze!
