Led by the incredible saxophonist Tom Challenger, Ma are one of the most exciting and innovative bands around at the moment. We’ve been trying to get them to Sandbar for ages so we’re delighted that we’ve finally managed to make it happen as part of their UK tour supporting their new album ‘The Last’. Improv, electronics and samples combine to create “long, glittering key chords invaded by clattering drum’n'bass patterns and hooted at by distant sax fragments” (John Fordham, The Guardian). Not to be missed…

For the last Freedom Principle before our Summer break we’re pleased to present the debut performance by the Johnny Hunter Group. You may well have seen drummer Johnny perform with Skamel, Marley Chingus or the Dub Jazz Soundsystem, or at the free improvisation Noise Upstairs events. With those influences combined with the talents of some of Manchester’s most in-demand emerging musicians, a storming night is guaranteed!
Ben Watte (saxophone), Graham South (trumpet), Stewart Wilson (bass), Johnny Hunter (drums)
